In May 1847, the nascent American Medical Association took what has been described as a revolutionary action by promulgating standards of ethical conduct for physicians, distinct from personal virtue or morality. Much has changed since its creation and to guide physicians in the face of continuing breakthroughs in science and changing conditions of practice, the Code must be a living document.
